Student-facing programmes

HEAN’s programmes and university masterclasses put particular emphasis on interactive activities and the latest research into how students make effective educational transitions. HEAN's programmes include workshops and masterclasses on the following topics:

1. Preparing for additional tests: UKCAT, BMAT & LNAT

Research has shown that fully familiarising students with additional tests can have a significant effect on performance but that students from low-progression schools are rarely supported in structuring their preparation (James, 2009; Lambe et al, 2012) 
HEAN’s masterclasses focus on: how to approach the LNAT, key question types, and how to prepare effectively.

2. Understanding student finance

Recent research has shown that 80% of students do not understand the basics of student finance including the support available through maintenance loans (NEON, 2015). HEAN’s interactive student finance workshops emphasize a staged approach to Information, Advice and Guidance ensuring that students understand the right messages at the right time in the application process.

 

3. Writing outstanding personal statements

HEAN has particular expertise in supporting students to write outstanding personal statements based on the latest research by Dr Steven Jones (Jones and HEAN, 2016). Participating students leave workshops having generated evidenced and subject-specific reasons for wishing to study their particular course; undertaken a short and independent research project that emphasizes their academic suitability for their subject; analysed additional curricular and extra-curricular activities.

HEAN creates programmes for the full university lifecycle and focuses at key transition points including:

University to employment programmes

  • A range of studies show that students from Widening Participation backgrounds fare less well than their more privileged peers when making the transition from university to employment. (Social Mobility Commission, 2016; Macmillan et al, 2014).
    Building on its expertise with students from Widening Participation backgrounds, HEAN takes a targeted approach creating bespoke programmes to improve progression rates to employment.

School to Higher Education programmes

  • HEAN's work across a variety programmes seeks to tackle the problem of supporting students' transition from school or college to Higher Education. HEAN's current focus is on changing systems for preparing students in low-progression schools and colleges.
